Free Workshop: SDG Booster - Geospatial technologies and GIS Solutions for IGAD countries (first session)
Free Workshop (Session 1): SDG Booster - Geospatial Technologies and GIS Solutions for IGAD Countries

Join us in developing digital commercial solutions for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)!

Starting in early 2020, the brand-new SDG Boosters will bring together companies, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), financial instruments and thematic experts to develop solutions and projects to address concrete needs identified from developing countries.

The first of the new SDG Boosters by UNTIL, Finnpartnership, Fingo and Business Finland is about Peace & Security, specifically focusing on geospatial technologies and Geographic Information System (GIS) solutions for IGAD countries (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, the Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda). Prior to the Peace & Security boosters, Finnpartnership attended AfricaGIS conference in Kigali, Rwanda on November 2019, and identified the main challenges and needs related to GIS technologies in IGAD countries. The companies and organizations attending the Peace & Security Boosters are expected to come together and create solutions and consortia in order to respond to the identified challenges.

Only Finnish companies or organizations are eligible participants for the workshops.

Challenge

According to the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Security Sector Program notes that access to land and water remains one of the security and development concerns prevailing in the IGAD region[1] particularly because of cultural, ethnic and economic undertones. With an ever-increasing population and the urge for families to secure land, conflicts over land create tensions in communities. While violence could become increasingly localized, its impact will be global with transnational implications. With more extractive exploration and exploitation of natural resources in once neglected borderlands, more localized conflicts over land use may also increase. The peripheries may become centres of oil and mineral exploration and exploitation thus intensification of tension and conflicts between the traditional centres and peripheries of African states may take place.

1. How can land management e.g. resolving land disputes, sustainable land use etc. be best supported by geospatial solutions utilizing free and open source software for GIS technologies?

2. How can geospatial solutions utilizing free and open source software for GIS technologies best support urbanization, urban planning and infrastructure in the IGAD region?

3. How can geospatial solutions utilizing free and open source software for GIS technologies best support natural resource management?

The first workshop will be held on 23 January 2020 and the second on 6 February 2020. At the first workshop, we come together to assess the needs and the suitability of our solutions. We begin the process of co-creating and developing our projects and consortia. At the second workshop, we continue to shape our products and projects and identify their development impacts and unique value propositions. We also learn to utilize public funding such as Finnpartnership and Business Finland.

The Booster workshops start at 8:30 with registration and morning coffee, there is lunch break at 11:20 – 12:30 and the wrap-up of the day will take place at 12:30 – 13:30. After the official part of the workshop, there is possibility to stay and continue discussions with the organizers and experts till 15:00. More specific agenda will be published soon.

After the workshops, Finnpartnership will arrange a “Doing Business with Finland” seminar in Kampala, Uganda in March 2020 where the results and solutions will be presented to business and government leaders of IGAD countries.

Registration is now open - click here. The registrations should be made by 13 January 2020.

Due to limited number of seats, please note that the organizers reserve the right to select the most suitable participants in order to ensure cross-sectoral contribution to the Boosters.

The Boosters will be arranged in accessible facilities. The location of the workshops will be in Helsinki city center, but more exact details about the venue will be published soon.
